BLOG#3-"The Two Exceptional Wives"

There are two prominent and distinguished wives of Troy. Those are Creusa, the wife of Aeneas in the book Aeneid and Andromache, the wife of Hector in Illiad and Oddysey. In Illiad and Odyssey, Andromache, foreseeing Hector’s death, pleads with him to withdraw from the fighting. “Dearest, your own great strength will be your death, and you have no pity on your little son, nor on me, ill-starred, who soon must be your widow …” She reminds Hector that all of her family have already been killed in war, including her father and seven brothers, all slain by Achilles, who is destined to defeat Hector in mortal combat. This is the moment on the battlements of Troy, when the Trojans’ great hero Hector has left the fighting momentarily; his wife Andromache comes to speak with him, accompanied by a nurse and their infant son, Astyanax. This designates the great affection expressed by Andromache to her husband.

Just like Andromache, Creusa exhibited such concern and affection to her husband, Aeneas. For instance, When Anchises refuses to leave the house, prompting Aeneas to decide that he will leave to continue the fight against the Greeks so that he may die in battle. Creusa grabs his feet and begs him to think of what would become of Ascanius, Anchises and herself if Aeneas were to be killed. As she does this, Ascanius catches fire with an un-earthly flame. The flame is quickly doused with water. Anchises believes this to be an omen from Jupiter, who confirms this omen by sending a shooting star. Anchises now agrees to flee Troy. The family leaves the home, Aeneas carrying his father and Ascanius holding his hand, while Creusa is to remain some distance behind them. This indicates the unconditional love of Creusa to her husband, Aeneas.

These two situations signify the tenderness of love of the two eminent wives in Troy. They showed their great passion of love to their husbands. And always be reminded that a wife is essential to great longevity. She is also the receptacle of half a man's cares, and two-thirds of his ill-humor. Wives are young men's mistresses, companions for middle age, and old men's nurses.

BLOG#2-“A Triumph beyond the Silhouettes”

What is something that we desire to have, work diligently our entire life for, and will do almost anything to obtain? It is victory. Victory is a favorable or desired outcome. It is also the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence. As individuals, we have a drive for victory, our life depends on it.  

The word “victory” could be reflected in the book Aeneid itself, especially in the adventures of Aeneas. After the fall of troy, Aeneas set sail from Troy. Many Trojans had joined him. All were eager to find somewhere to settle, but no one had any clear idea where that should be. At that time, Aeneas was told in a dream that the place destined for them was a country far away to the west Italy. Although the Promised Land was distant by a long journey, they were still thankful for the assurance that they would someday have their own home. This situation denotes the ultimate victory of the Trojans behind the defeat they experienced after the fall of Troy. This proves that they are still blessed, in spite of all the adversities they suffered. Those hardships that they experienced were given to them in order to teach them some lessons and for them to be strong enough to the problems that they will experience in the future.

Always remember that there is no gain without taking risk. How can a man who never ventures win? In life one has to take bold decisions quickly. Time and tide wait for nobody. The timid, weak and undecided are swept aside by the tide of time. Determination and concentration can enable a man to attain success in any field of life. So success is not a matter of luck, it depends on firm determination and full preparation. Nothing is impossible to a man who has a purpose and the perseverance to persist with it.

BLOG#1-"The Decease of Trojans"

Odysseus came up with a plan to get the Greeks into Troy. Under Athena's direction, the Greeks built a gigantic wooden horse with a hollow body. Odysseus and an elite group of Greek warriors hid inside the horse. Their Greek companions took the horse to the city gates and left it there with an inscription explaining it was dedicated to Athena. The Greek army then withdrew from sight, pretending to sail away. The Trojans weren't quite sure what to do with the horse. Some wanted to destroy it. Others wanted to bring it inside, and still others could hardly contain their curiosity.

A raggedly dressed Greek soldier, Sinon appeared. He said that the Greek army had planned to sacrifice him to Athena, but he had escaped. Athena was furious with the Greeks, he explained, because they had stolen the Palladium. As if disclosing a great secret, Sinon told the Trojans that the Greeks had built the great wooden horse as an offering to Athena, but that they'd purposely built it to be too big to fit through the city's gates. The horse would replace the Palladium and bring the Trojans victory. Most of the Trojans agreed that they should try to get the horse inside the city walls. One man, however, spoke out against the idea. The prophet Laocoon, wary of what the horse would bring, warned the Trojans not to trust the Greeks. To emphasize his point, Laocoon threw his spear at the horse. Just then, a two fearful serpents glided straight to him. They wrapped their huge coils around him. The people misinterpreted the situation, and so, Laocoon was punished for opposing the entry of the horse. Then after, the Trojans decided to bring the horse into the city. When the horse was inside Troy's walls, they celebrated what they believed was their sure victory. No one noticed Sinon release the Greek warriors who hid inside the horse. The warriors who'd hidden in the horse opened the city gates. They sacked Troy, destroying the city completely and capturing all the Trojans they could find.

As a matter of fact, I really feel compassionate and sympathetic about the fall of Troy and the suffering of Trojans under the Greeks. Too many Trojans had been slaughtered in the battle. By the time the Trojans were awake, before they realized what had happened, while they were struggling into their armor, Troy was burning. Actually, it was not a fighting, it was a butchery. Very many died without ever a chance of dealing a blow in return.

Truthfully, I admired Aeneas’s courageousness in the story. He fought the Greeks as long as he could find a living Trojan to stand with him. But as the slaughter spread and the death came near, he thought of his home, the helpless people he had left there. He could do nothing more for Troy, but perhaps o something could be done for them. He hurried to his old father, his son and his wife. And his mother, Venus, urged him to escape.

When he set sail from Troy, many Trojans had joined him. All were eager to find somewhere to settle, but no one had any clear idea where that should be. Several times they started to build a city, but they were always driven away by misfortune or bad omens. At last Aeneas was told in a dream that the place destined for them was a country far away to the west Italy. Although the Promised Land was distant by a long voyage over unknown seas, they were still thankful for the assurance that they would someday have their own home. Before they reached their desired heaven; however, a long time passed, and much happened which if they had known beforehand might have checked their eagerness. I adored his enthusiasm and keenness in the story. He was really determined to achieve his destiny to found the Rome.

BLOG#5- A Hiding Smile in the Shadows

The smile has become a hallmark of Leonardo's style. It is most obvious in the painting of the Mona Lisa, but also to be seen in most of his other works. There is no mistaking the same smile and upturn of the left side of the mouth on the face of St. Anne in the Burlington House Cartoon. That drawing dates from a bit earlier than the Mona Lisa, somewhere around 1498. Speculation exists that the smile originated from his mother, Caterina. A less romantic suggestion is that the painter merely "concerned himself with certain arrangements of lines and volumes, with new and curious schemes of blues and greens."

The truth is that this style of smile was not invented by Leonardo da Vinci. It can be found in a number of sculptures from the fifteenth century, one of these being Antonio Rossellino's Virgin; it is somewhat reminiscent of Greek funerary statues and Gothic statues in medieval cathedrals. The mysterious smile can also be found very widely in the works of Leonardo's master, Verrocchio and Leonardo used the same smile in a number of his paintings.  

A variety of other suggestions have also been made as to the reason behind the smile including the simple idea that during this period in history women were instructed to smile only with one side of their mouths so as to add an air of mystery and elegance. An Italian doctor's answer was that the woman suffered from bruxism, an unconscious habit of grinding the teeth during sleep or times of great stress. The long months of sitting for the portrait could well have triggered an attack of teeth grinding. Another  reason is the dental analysis of the Mona Lisa which is based upon the assumption of Leonardo Da Vinci's accurate portrayal of the features he observed in the subject, concludes that the enigmatic smile is not a smile at all, but rather a solemn expression whose appearance is characteristic of people who have lost their front teeth.

The smile of Mona Lisa in the painting expresses such happiness, in my opinion. But I think, there is something troubling her that we cannot see easily. Its meaning lies in Leonardo’s imagination and ideas, not in some secret skeletal clue buried in a vault. That is why the painting has remained an enigma to art enthusiasts and perhaps the most famous painting in the world. Always remember, art is an idea that has found its perfect visual expression, and design is the vehicle by which this expression is made possible. It is the foundation of all the arts.

BLOG#4- A Picture of Him

I saw a guy. He came near me. Then, he said hello. He introduced himself as Pepe. I also introduced myself because he seems so nice. He looks so familiar. But I don’t know where I saw him. Well, he’s so friendly, I think. We were at an old huge house that looks also so familiar. He invited me to tour their house. And I absolutely I agreed. Maybe he’s a tourist guide because he knows how to interact with other people and he seems so intelligent. He also has a Spanish accent.

He dressed finely. I think he’s rich and he’s a nobleman. It’s fun to be with him he’s like an old brother. We went to a room where there were so many books. Books like Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo, and other books with a picture of our national hero, Jose Rizal. I asked him politely the reason why he has all of these books but he did not answer. He just smiled. I became curious. So I asked him too many questions like what’s his real name, what old is he, what’s his mother’s name, etc. He just laughed at me. He didn’t answer even one of my questions.

He asked me to make myself comfortable in that house, and he said he will just get some coffee and biscuits for our merienda and he promised me that he will answer all of my questions when he go back. I walked wondering around that room looking at all those books. I was left thinking who he really was because I think I knew him. Think. Think. Think. Now, I knew the answer. He’s the picture in these books.

I woke up. Oh, it was just a dream. I fell asleep while I was reading in advance the biography of the author of Noli Me Tangere. Amazing. J

BLOG#3- A Journey to the Circles of Hell

Hell is a place of eternal suffering and punishment in an afterlife, often after resurrection according to many mythological, folklore and religious traditions. Religions with a linear divine history often depict hell as endless. Religions with a cyclic history often depict a hell as an intermediary period between incarnations. Typically, these traditions locate hell under the Earth’s external surface. It often includes entrances to Hell from the land of the living. 

As an individual of this society, I cannot deny the fact that I committed such sins. Sin plays a major part in the human condition. A human without sin is a very rare breed and in my opinion, nonexistent. Without sin, we would not be a human life form. We would be up there with Jesus Christ and the almighty one himself. However, sin is punished. Some wages of sin are death. One of those is being irresponsible in passing requirements in a subject, specifically Research. This falls in the first circle of hell which is the circle of irresponsibility or recklessness which is guided by Mrs. Bautista. The punishment in this circle is to pass the requirements needed for the subject area. Second one was being indolent in some household chores. This comprises the second circle which is the circle of indolence or slothful, guided by my mother, Alma Grace. The chastisement for this sin is to be industrious in the household chores. The third circle is the circle of fraud or dishonesty. Honestly, I once committed this sin in other way. The castigation for this misdeed is to correct all those wrongdoings and untruthfulness that one has obligated which is guided by my mom. Another one is saying bad words which falls in the fourth circle. The retribution for this circle is to refrain from speaking bad words which is guided by my grandmother. The fifth circle comprises the souls of persons who aren’t frequently attending mass which is guided by my grandma again. Another circle is the circle of greediness or strongly desiring for more than required which is the sixth circle of hell. This is escorted by my mother. And the last circle, the seventh circle which is the circle of enviousness or covetousness which I once committed when my mom is giving such special attention with my sisters which succumb me to a temptation of being envious. This circle is guided by my mother, Alma Grace.

Our sins, our judgments and our wrong doings make us unclean or unworthy to dwell in the presence of our Father in Heaven. Through the loving, willing sacrifice of our savior Jesus Christ and the love of our Father in Heaven we can be forgiven of our past sins and move more joyfully towards the Kingdom of God. Repentance is one of the most essential principals to our temporal, spiritual and eternal happiness. Repentance is much more than just acknowledging our wrong doings. It is a change of mind and a full change of heart that will in turn give us a fresh view about God, about ourselves, family, friends, and the world around us. When we act upon repentance we are showing our love for God and the true desire that we have to follow His Great Commandments, we find ourselves turning away from sin and ask towards God for forgiveness.

BLOG#2-Two is Better than One

It was actually a hectic day of Monday where everyone was definitely busy finishing their own tasks. The two best friends, Gem and Ruth met in their classroom and started to talk.

 “Good morning Gem!” Ruth greeted gladly. She asked Gem if she knew what would be the respective part that they were to clean this month of December.

“I have no idea. It’s better for us to consult the bulletin board,” Gem replied.

          On that time, they went and looked at the bulletin board.

“Yes! I remember. We are to clean at the front of the Admin,” Ruth said.

Gem added that she don’t feel cleaning that area because of the continuous falling of dried leaves which seems to hasten their work.

“Fine. Stop those murmurs. It is better to start cleaning. So, kindly get some broomsticks and dustpans for the two of us,” Ruth stated undoubtedly.

Gem instantaneously went to the cabinet and she got the cleaning materials they need.

“Here are the cleaning materials we need. Let’s go!” Gem said.

          They walked faster until they reached the front of the Admin.

“I suggest you start to clean that part and I will do the same here so that we will finish easier,” Ruth suggested.

        “And faster!” Gem exclaimed.

They both laughed and after cleaning, Gem said that they have cleaned that much and besides, they were almost done.

“I’ve noticed that as well. Is it a good idea to ask some help from our group mates?” Ruth asked.

“I got your point. It would be better for us to ask them to finish what we have started,” Gem told.

          “Exactly, here they are!” Gem suddenly exclaimed.

“Finally! Our group mates, kindly continue the job for us,” Ruth said.

          Soon after, Gem and Ruth both left and they returned to their room and attend their first subject for the day. J

BLOG#7- "MY TEACHER, MY HERO"

A teacher is a person who impart knowledge or any object from which something may be learned. A teacher is a person who guides students in learning. A teacher is somehow like her…

She is friendly. When you’re with her, you feel like she’s only your elder sister. You feel comfortable when you’re beside her. She is nice in every way. When she’s angry, she just decides to be silent. On the other day, she’s already ok. In short, she is a great adviser. I may describe her exaggeratedly but it’s her. And I can’t do anything about it.

In teaching, she just don’t focus on the topic to be discussed but she focuses in the learning process itself. She motivates students to learn more in the subject she’s teaching. She even tell stories of her life. She relate it sometimes in our topic. She give fair attention to students, no favoritism. J. She is the kind of teacher I was looking for.

She’s my hero. She saved me from being bored and being uninterested in learning. I think that she is a living role model to students. She’s my favorite teacher. Let’s give her a big round of applause, Miss Jennylou A. Pangilinan.

Blog#6- “Life or Death”

To be, or not to be: that is the question:

Choose the pain and treat it as an illusion,

Or face death that signifies a weak action.

Undergo aches or rest in peace perfection.

To be, or not to be: that is the question:

Be brave enough to face a real imagination.

Life is too short to experience suffering,

Just revel with it and stop thinking ending.

To be, or not to be: that is the question:

Don’t be a coward looking for lamentation.

Life after death seems unimaginable.

Why don’t make each moment unforgettable.

Blog#5- A Farce of Mistaken Identity in Ephesus

“The Comedy of Errors” is really a humorous comedy play of William Shakespeare. The play mainly focuses on the main relationship between husband and wife, parent-child love and brotherly friendship for some serious discussion. The Comedy of Errors is not a comedy of ideas. It is a situational farce of mistaken identity with violent physical comedy. The plot of this play is just fairly simple but sometimes full of misidentification ridiculous situations.

Like in a farce, the audience is asked to believe in a world that looks similar, but mainly exaggerates and builds upon society’s mistakes. Twins used to be viewed as two separate paths which could be taken, of as a set of alternate paths. Sons were often considered to be extensions of their fathers. I really enjoyed the plot of this play even though confusions increase as the story goes on and on. For example is the two Antipholus, they are not only having trouble with their identity because their perception changed, but also because they are recognized as someone else in a strange land.

The play contains all the elements of a Shakespearean comedy. There’s a conflict, some resolution, confusion is cleared up, families and lovers get reunited, and it’s also a funny or comic one. The play is also filled with upsetting subjects. There are broken families, a troubled marriage, slavery, grief and anger and even frequent violence. It is not only the characters' confusion that is released by the final scene, it is in which the "errors" are well- explained and resolved. The simplicity, with which these problems are overcome, indicates to the theme of the play which is “Love and happiness will conquest over all”.
